This shoddy and emotive! And to argue that these "revolutionaries" as you put it were not in touch with the Kingdom of God is rather insulting to their memories.Guestnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5710845602477644495.post-46648526424053523712009-05-21T19:32:44.000+12:002009-05-21T19:32:44.000+12:00Interesting post, tension inherent in the the here...Interesting post, tension inherent in the the here now/not yet nature of the kingdom of God is something that is mysterious yet vitally important for everyday life.

You state that the convert is "indelibly written into the book of life", but doesnt that take away human freedom to be "unconverted"?

In regards to the gradualism vs abolitionist tension, what about Dr. King's quote
"Justice delayed is justice denied"? This was a direct rebuttal of the gradualist, delaying action of elements in the civil rights movement. Surely the gravity of the issue pushes the pendulum to the abolishonist end of the spectrum?

As for even indirectly blaming the Abolitionists for the bloodshed of the Civil war, this is quite wrong. A cursory examination of the wikipedia page reveals that the main reasons for war were the Southerners decision to secede, because of their unwillingness to comprimise at all with the north, they saw the writing on the wall with having a declaration of independence which directly contradicted their main source of "sub-human" labour by stating that "all men are created equal".

The main problem with gradualism is that it seems to undermine the significance of the moral issue at stake.
I understand that it is certainly defensible in terms of the "realpolitik" of how stuff gets changed in our society, and it does fit in with the ideas of Mother Teresa when she says:
"We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But
the ocean would be less because of that missing drop."Cedricnoreply@blogger.com
